Set on the Yakima River floodplain, Yakima Sportsman State Park is a lush oasis on the otherwise arid eastern Washington landscape. The wetlands, ponds, and shade-trees provide a comfortable habitat for a wide variety of wildlife—140 species of bird have been spotted in this park. The greenery also adds to a great camping experience. With wetland trails, playsets for the kids, a volleyball court, and much more, Yakima Sportsman offers families so much to see and do. The land was originally developed as a recreation area by the Yakima Sportsman’s Association in the 1940s to preserve natural resources and wildlife habitat, as well as provide a place for skeet shooting. You may spot some old clay-pigeon traps in the park from long ago. Today, the Yakima Sportsman Association’s dream lives on, with plenty of rainbow trout in the park’s fishing pond.
