Sucia Island Marine State Park, one of the northern San Juan Islands, is renowned by boaters around the world for its breathtaking beauty and sense of solitude. The larger island is shaped like a crescent and framed by several smaller islands, all set like emeralds in the surrounding deep blue waters. Boaters and kayakers can pull into one of the several protected bays, like Echo, Fossil, or Shallow, and drop anchor or pull onto shore to discover island treasures. Once you’re on the island, you’ll spot striking sandstone formations along the shoreline and cliffs. The layered cliffs and weathered tidepool formations have been shaped by the wind, rain, and saltwater over tens of millions of years. The name “Sucia,” meaning “foul” in Spanish, was given by Spanish explorers who found the surrounding reefs and islets to be obstacles during their voyage.
