Steptoe Battlefield State Park Heritage Site sits on the grounds of a victorious battle Native peoples led against U.S. Army troops in 1858. Come and look out over the rolling hills of the Palouse as you read about this pivotal moment on a short interpretive trail. Tensions were rising in this region as U.S. settlers and military encroached on Indigenous land, often searching for gold. After a battle lasting several days, the Coeur d’Alene, Palouse, and Spokane Native peoples came together and surrounded Steptoe’s troops, forcing them to retreat to Walla Walla. Today, the site serves as a peaceful memorial and educational landmark about a painful time in the region’s history. There is a picnic table next to a stone monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution, which makes for a nice lunch stop while you’re there.
