Spencer Spit State Park is one of the few car-accessible state parks in the San Juans. It is a beloved, lively family camping destination on Lopez Island featuring a saltwater lagoon and stunning views of Decatur and Blakeley Islands. The park is named for a sand spit that encloses a peaceful saltwater lagoon, which attracts migratory birds, harbor seals, and other wildlife. Water rich with sealife means that crabbing, clamming, and fishing are popular activities here in season. Two miles of hiking trails loop around the park and out to the sand spit. Spencer Spit is particularly attractive to families because of the Junior Ranger Interpretive program which runs from July 5 to Labor Day. Kids can learn about the park’s unique ecosystem and play games, all on the way to gaining a badge designating them as Junior Rangers. The park offers a range of campsites, including private and forested or walk-in beachside spots. There are also three campsites available for those arriving by human-powered watercraft on the Cascadia Marine Trail.
