Sequim Bay State Park is the perfect gateway for exploring the northern Olympic Peninsula. Set on Sequim Bay, a small inlet off the Strait of Juan de Fuca, this camping park features boat and paddle-friendly waters. Hiking, birding, and fishing are also popular here. The Olympic Discovery Trail, a 120-mile recreation trail stretching from Port Townsend to the Pacific Ocean, passes through this park. Sequim Bay is relatively dry compared to the surrounding regions because it’s in the “rain shadow” of the Olympic Mountains. Rain and moisture from the Pacific Ocean hits the Olympic Mountains first, so the air that reaches Sequim Bay is much drier. Off-season campers enjoy taking advantage of that drier winter weather while still experiencing a seaside getaway. Sequim Bay is close to both Port Angeles and Sequim, which makes for an easy drive to shopping and restaurants. “Sequim” is an Indigenous word which means “place for going to shoot.” Indigenous people used to hunt for elk and waterfowl in this region.
