Fishermen, look no further than Schafer State Park for steelhead, salmon, and a peaceful day on the river. Schafer offers solitude and lush greenery along the Satsop River in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. Camping, inner tubing, and forest walks are some other popular activities here. The park was named for the Schafer family, a couple generations of whom homesteaded and logged the surrounding land. The Schafer Brothers Lumber Company ended up becoming one of the largest lumber milling and shipping businesses in the whole state. The land is a state park today thanks to the Schafer brothers, who donated a parcel to the State Parks Committee in their parents name, creating one of Washington's first state parks. Schafer is unique because it’s both a state and national historic site on the Washington Heritage Register and National Register of Historic Places. Today, you can read about the homesteading history at interpretive exhibits in the park.
