No trip to Spokane is complete without stopping at Riverside State Park. This park is Eastern Washington’s second-largest state park, stretching across 10,000 acres of freshwater marshes and pine forests along the Spokane and Little Spokane rivers. There is no shortage of recreational opportunities here—from horseback riding to mountain biking to whitewater rafting, Riverside offers something for everyone. Visitors can explore over 55 miles of multi-use trails, including scenic routes through the Bowl and Pitcher area, known for its dramatic rock formations and historic suspension bridge. The Nine Mile Recreation Area is a favorite spot for swimmers, boaters, and anglers to enjoy Lake Spokane, while the Little Spokane River Natural Area offers ample opportunities for peaceful kayaking and wildlife viewing. In the southern portion of the park, you’ll find an off-road vehicle area, a designated equestrian area, and plenty of trails to explore. In the winter, Riverside State Park transforms into a winter sports enthusiasts’ wonderland, offering snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Camping options range from reservable cabins to full-service campgrounds in the historic Bowl and Pitcher area.

Much of Riverside State Park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1933 and 1936. Their craftsmanship is still visible today in the park’s rustic stone and log structures, including a replica of the historic Spokane House, one of the earliest fur trading posts in the region. In addition, long before the CCC arrived, the confluence of the Spokane and Little Spokane rivers served as a significant gathering place for local Indigenous tribes—particularly during the annual salmon runs, when the rivers teemed with life. Visitors can explore this rich cultural and historical legacy via the many interpretive opportunities that Riverside offers.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a glimpse into the past, Riverside State Park offers something for everyone—right in Spokane’s backyard.
