Humans, wildlife, and earth peacefully coexist at Potlatch State Park. The creek that runs through the forested campground welcomes spawning salmon in the fall. While you’re camping, you may spot local elk herds foraging for grasses and leaves. Oysters, clams, and crabs are all here in abundance and may be harvested in season. The waters of Hood Canal are calm and blue, and beckon visitors to kayak, swim, and dive. Windier days also make for great wind surfing. This is a popular spot for family camping because of the Junior Ranger and other kids’ interpretive programs that spark learning and curiosity about the natural environment. Potlatch State Park is truly captivating, but if you’re yearning for more of the Olympic Peninsula, Potlatch is a great launching point to explore lush riverside hikes along the four major rivers in the area. This park is named for the potlatches, or gift-giving ceremonies, the Skokomish Indians held here during their winter campouts.
