If you’re into hiking and meandering long forested trails, Mount Spokane is the place for you. Mount Spokane is one of Washington’s largest state parks with over 100 miles of trails in the rugged Selkirk Mountains. Warm or cold, dry or snowy, Mount Spokane offers it all throughout the year. Most of the trails are multi-use, so the summer brings out mountain bikers and equestrians alongside hikers. Many different types of wildlife call this forest home, including deer, moose, and black bears, so be sure to stay on the trails and respect your surroundings. In the colder months, the pine trees stand blanketed with sparkly white snow while snowshoers and cross-country skiers glide gently through, perhaps on their way to one of the warming shelters. One of the most popular stops at Mount Spokane State Park is the Vista House at the summit of Mount Spokane, a rustic stone shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933. On a clear day, the view stretches from the sprawling farmlands of Spokane Valley to the forested mountains and lakes of the north Idaho panhandle. There is plenty to explore in the park, but if you’re longing to get back to the city, Spokane is only a 45 minute drive away.
