Monticello Convention Site Park, WA
Monticello Convention State Park Heritage Site is a small park in Longview which tells the story of the local settlers who helped catalyze the creation of Washington State. In 1852, settlers gathered near this site and petitioned Congress to create a new territory north of the Columbia River, separate from Oregon. This and a similar petition at Cowlitz Landing led Congress to establish Washington Territory in 1853, which eventually became Washington State in 1889. Today, you can take in this history by reading the interpretive panels and taking a rest under the vibrant trees at the Monticello Convention Site.
