Matia Island Marine State Park is set on small, secluded Matia Island in the San Juans. This park is known for its rare old-growth forest, turquoise coves, and sandstone formations. Boaters will appreciate the dock and buoys available to tie up before setting foot on this fairytale island. Starting from the dock, visitors can enjoy a loop hike through dense forest canopy which opens up to a rocky cove. There is primitive camping available for those who want to stay and soak in Matia’s rugged beauty. The island’s name derives from its Spanish title, “Isle de Mata,” given by the captain of a 1792 expedition to the San Juans. Mata means lush plant growth. Matia Island is part of the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and the state park land is one of the only publicly accessible parts of the entire refuge.
