Lime Kiln State Park, otherwise known as the “Whale Watch Park,” is one of the best land-based places to whale-watch on the planet. With its prime location on the west side of San Juan Island facing the Haro Strait, it’s no wonder. Humpback whales, orcas, and porpoises are all known to pass through this area. The best months to spot orcas, humpback whales, and minke whales is from May to September, with salmon runs determining peak times. Endangered resident orca sightings are rare. Sea lions and porpoises may be seen further into spring and fall. You can watch the show from the park’s picturesque 1919 lighthouse or a cliff situated on the rocky bluffs.

Don’t miss the Lime Kiln Point Interpretive Center, which educates visitors about the local sea life and the park’s lime mining history. One of the lime kilns used to process limestone in the late 19th to early 20th century still stands by a hiking trail in the north of the park. Interpreters are available for lighthouse tours and marine mammal talks during the summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day and are offered by Friends of Lime Kiln Society.
