Lewis and Clark Trail State Park is a lush escape nestled amidst the rolling fields of southeastern Washington. This part of the state is typically dry, but with the cool Touchet River running through the park, the hiking trails are shaded by ponderosa pine, cottonwood and maple trees. Tubing and fishing are popular river activities here. Stay and camp to explore the park’s interesting geology and history through interpretive panels. The park is aptly named—Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery stayed here in 1806 on their return journey from the Pacific Coast with two guides from local Indigenous tribes, who long used this area as a pathway between the Columbia River and the Rocky Mountains. Homesteaders raised families on this land after U.S. government surveys and policies forcibly displaced Indigenous people from their land.
