Lewis and Clark State Park, brimming with emerald green old-growth forest, encompasses the historic north spur of the Oregon Trail. This lush park offers the classic camping experience, including fire rings, horseshoe pits, picnicking, and an amphitheater. Equestrians can also grab their horses for a trail ride through the dense forest canopy and then set up camp at one of the equestrian campsites. Hikers will equally enjoy the several miles of trails through cedar and hemlock, bright green ferns, nurse logs, and mosses that almost glow. Lewis and Clark was one of Washington’s first state parks, dedicated in 1922 to preserve the last stand of old growth forest along the Pacific Highway. In the 1930s, young men from the New Deal’s Civilian Conservation Corps developed the park’s trail system, caretaker’s house, and community kitchen shelters. Some of their craftsmanship still stands today.
