Larrabee State Park is Washington’s first state park, and it is a beauty. Set on Samish Bay near Bellingham, you get breathtaking views of the San Juan Islands, tidepools and weathered sandstone formations, and plenty of forested trails to explore. This park is also on the scenic Chuckanut Drive, a meandering road that passes through the sandstone cliffs of the Chuckanut Mountains and which you continue to see at Larrabee. The sandstone in this region is part of the Chuckanut Formation, and sometimes you can find fossilized plants or animals from millions of years ago. Larrabee also boasts two freshwater lakes, Fragrance and Lost lakes, where people often go fishing for trout and bass. Frances Larrabee, a civic leader and benefactor in the area, donated the 20 acres of land to become a state park in 1915.
