James Island, WA

Reach the bluff on James Island’s loop trail and you’re greeted with a spectacular view of the forested San Juan Islands against the glittering blue Puget Sound. This is one of the many benefits of making the trek across the water to this magical boat-access-only island. Much of it is a Natural Forest Area closed to the public, but that only makes this remote island more mysterious and beautiful. James Island features some of the best of the San Juans, including an isthmus connecting two rare white sand beaches, turquoise coves, and rugged, awe-inspiring cliffs. For a truly refreshing getaway, stay on one of the 13 primitive campsites on the island or moor your boat overnight.
