Do you long for a better glimpse of space and all its wonders? Goldendale Observatory State Park Heritage Site houses one of the largest and most accessible public telescopes in the United States, with regular programming for visitors to view stars, planets, and galaxies. Goldendale’s skies are so dark you can see the Milky Way stretching across the whole sky. During the day, enjoy spectacular views of the Columbia River Gorge and view the sun through filtered telescopes. Goldendale’s telescope was built by four amateur astronomers in the 1960s, who eventually donated the telescope to the town of Goldendale. In order to visit the observatory or visitor center, you need to make an appointment online through the Friends of Gorge Area Parks website. The park is close to Maryhill State Park and Columbia Hills Historical State Park, both with campsites if you’d like to stay and explore.
