High bluffs, a breezy beach, and a historic lighthouse keeping watch over Admiralty Inlet. All this and more at Fort Worden Historical State Park, an iconic multi-use park that was once a key WWI-era coastal defense site on the Puget Sound. You won’t want to miss the chance to explore the headland and historic structures where hundreds of troops once lived. Bring a flashlight to explore the tunnels beneath hidden gun emplacements. Above ground, wander past original Victorian buildings including a seaside castle and dignified officers’ homes, or hit several miles of scenic trails on foot or bike. Take advantage of many learning opportunities, including the Commanding Officers’ Quarters Museum, Coast Artillery Museum, and Marine Science Center. Also, keep an eye out for the many workshops, art exhibits, and music events that are often held in Fort Worden’s historic buildings.
Fort Worden was part of the “triangle of fire” with Fort Flagler on Marrowstone Island and Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, two other national defense forts turned state parks that were designed to protect the Puget Sound.
