Fort Townsend is one of the oldest U.S. Army sites in Washington, established during the pioneer era in 1856 to protect Euro-American settlers on the Olympic Peninsula. Although the park no longer has the original buildings and primarily serves as a beachside camping and hiking destination, there are interpretive opportunities where you can learn about the people and structures that once lived here. This park is a great place to explore and photograph lowland flora and fauna as you wander through the several miles of trails lined with Douglas fir and western hemlock trees. This is also a beautiful place to hold gatherings—people often host weddings and other events at Friends’ Barn, a replica of an 1800s stable that overlooks Port Townsend Bay and the Cascade Mountains.
