Located along the pretty Green River, Flaming Geyser State Park attracts rafters, tubers, and kayakers for summer fun on the water. As you unwind and listen to the sound of the breeze blowing through the trees, you may also hear the buzzing of model airplanes, flown by hobbyists at this park’s dedicated model aircraft area. Flaming Geyser is named after its methane seeps, uncovered by a coal miner back in the 1910s who discovered methane gas and saltwater bubbling up from hundreds of feet below after drilling through the earth. For many years, a “flaming geyser” was lit for visitors using this natural methane gas seep, with flames reaching up to 15 feet. The methane gas has since depleted, although there are opportunities to learn about the ecological wonder at the original site.
