Deception Pass State Park, known for its picturesque bridges that connect Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands, is Washington’s most visited state park. As soon as you arrive, you’ll understand exactly why. Walking or driving across the bridges, you’ll see stunning panoramic views of the Puget Sound, the rugged cliffs of Douglas fir-covered islands, and sunsets that could be paintings.
There is so much to do at Deception Pass. Bowman Bay is a great place to learn about the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps, who developed the park during the Great Depression as a way to provide for their families. The trees also hold plenty of history at Hoypus Point, which features trails through centuries-old forests, some of which allow horses and bikes. West Beach and North Beach have fun for the whole family with swimming and fishing at Cranberry Lake and an amphitheater featuring interpretive programs. Rosario Beach is a great spot for tidepools. While you’re there, visit the iconic Maiden of Deception Pass story pole, which tells the story of Ko-kwal-alwoot, guardian of the sea protecting the people of the Samish Indian Nation. With so much to explore, you might want to stay awhile—camping is available at Bowman Bay, Cranberry Lake, and Quarry Pond.
