Steptoe Butte State Park Heritage Site features a breathtaking panoramic view of the Palouse Hills and farmland. The park encompasses an ancient butte made of quartzite, some of the oldest rock in the Pacific Northwest at 400 million years old. The monolith rises 3,600 feet above the smaller Palouse Hills, raising you high enough to see Idaho and Oregon. The geological significance of Steptoe Butte earned it designation as a National Natural Landmark. It is one of the nation’s outstanding examples of natural history and geology. In the past, this Steptoe has played home to a wagon road, hotel, and observatory. Today, you can enjoy a packed lunch at one of the picnic tables or even barbecue at one of the braziers. Sit back and take in the green and golden hues of the Palouse. There’s no better place to eat with a view.
