Spring Creek Hatchery State Park has two main draws—prime windsurfing conditions on the Columbia River Gorge and the nearby Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery. The westerly winds pushing against the river currents create white caps and swells perfect for windsurfers and kiteboarders to enjoy a day on the water. The Columbia River Gorge is renowned for its windsurfing conditions, and Spring Creek Hatchery is one of those coveted locations with consistent winds. National windsurfing competitions have been held here from time-to-time. Non-windsurfers can enjoy the show and views of Mount Hood from the park’s picnic areas, birding, or fishing for small-mouth bass from the river’s edge. Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery, which raises salmon and steelhead to repopulate the Columbia River, provides tours and education about fish life cycles and river conservation. The fish hatchery was created in 1901 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to support declining salmon populations. Today, the hatchery helps mitigate habitat impacts from hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River and fulfills tribal treaty rights for fishing.
